Kamilaroi man Corey Tutt from Sydney Uni and NSW Young Australian of the Year 2020, Deadly Science founder and University Research Assistant.
Originally from Dapto, in the Illawarra, Corey started the Deadly Science initiative in 2018. The program provides remote schools with scientific resources and connects young Indigenous people with mentors to encourage their participation in STEMM subjects.
Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Michael Spence said; “His efforts to engage with more than 90 schools nationwide to inspire interest in STEM-related subjects are simply astounding. Corey is a true inspiration to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia and the entire University of Sydney community.”
Corey’s favourite quote is Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. He feels that in life you can be faced with many barriers that you need to learn to overcome, and he thinks the way we remove those barriers is by chasing our dreams and being the change to break the cycle.
Corey is really keen to grow the program this year, so he has started a philanthropic drive with a DeadlyScience fundraising page. Every donation will help pay the transport costs to send books to remote schools and to buy a copy of Dark Emu for each school.
Corey will discuss his mission at Sydney Rotary Club’s online meeting next month.
You are invited to support Rotary’s Centennial Project – Give Every Child a Future.
