What is the Blue Economy?

According to the World Bank, the blue economy is the "sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and jobs while preserving the health of ocean ecosystem."

European Commission defines it as "All economic activities related to oceans, seas and coasts. It covers a wide range of interlinked established and emerging sectors."

The Commonwealth of Nations considers it "an emerging concept which encourages better stewardship of our ocean or 'blue' resources."

Sydney Rotary’s Vision

Sydney Rotary is exploring a large-scale project to make a meaningful impact on the Blue Economy. A dedicated sub-committee is currently evaluating an initiative aimed at:

  • Reducing ocean plastic waste through innovative solutions.
     
  • Creating scalable, sustainable outcomes by unlocking economic value from waste plastic.
     
  • Attracting partnerships with businesses active in marine sustainability and regional development.
     
  • Empowering communities across the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
Our Hypothesis
 
By converting waste plastic into reusable materials, we can:
 
  • Incentivise the collection of plastic waste before it enters waterways.
     
  • Drive removal of plastic currently polluting the oceans.
     
  • Reduce reliance on manufacturing new plastic from raw materials.
This project has the potential to generate not only environmental benefits but also new revenue streams and business models that support sustainable development in affected regions.
