Sydney Rotary NSW Consular Community

Rotary and the United Nations have a shared history of working toward peace and addressing humanitarian issues around the world.

Rotary International has a seat in the General Assembly of the United Nations in recognition of the efforts of its membership to foster goodwill and peace across national boundaries. Rotary is the world's largest Non-Government Foundation providing educational and humanitarian aid.

Today, Rotary holds the highest consultative status offered to a nongovernmental organisation by the UN’s Economic and Social Council, which oversees many specialised UN agencies. The Rotary Representative Network maintains and furthers its relationship with several UN bodies, programs, commissions, and agencies. This network consists of Rotary International representatives to the United Nations and other organisations.

Rotary Day at the United Nations each year celebrates the organisations’ shared vision for peace and highlights the critical humanitarian activities that Rotary and the United Nations lead around the world.

The Sydney Rotary Consular Luncheon: Connecting Sydney to the World

Each year, Sydney Rotary hosts a signature luncheon dedicated to the NSW Consular Corps. This prestigious event brings together Consul Generals from around the globe to engage with Rotarians, discuss the topical issues of the day, and explore collaborative opportunities for humanitarian service.

A highlight of the luncheon is the formal presentation from our Peace Committee Chair and International Committee Chair. These updates showcase the tangible impact of Sydney Rotary’s work, both locally and abroad, and demonstrate our commitment to "Business with Purpose" on a global scale.

While perhaps smaller in scope than Rotary Day at the United Nations, this luncheon remains a cornerstone of our annual calendar. By bringing together diplomatic representatives from so many diverse nations, we continue to foster the international peace, harmony, and fellowship that sit at the heart of the Rotary mission.

The Origins of Our Consular Luncheon

The tradition of the Sydney Rotary Consular Luncheon is closely tied to the dedicated service of Rotarian Paul Wenham, who served first as the Consul of Finland and later as the Honorary Consul of Kiribati. In his capacity as Secretary-General of the NSW Consular Corps, Paul was instrumental in mobilising the diplomatic community, turning the luncheon into a highly anticipated annual event following his induction to the club in 2003.

The Consuls greatly valued these gatherings, as they provided a rare social forum to connect with fellow diplomats and Rotarians in a relaxed setting. A hallmark of the day remains the warm welcome extended by our Club President, ensuring every visiting representative is personally recognised and celebrated.

Following Paul's retirement from his leadership role within the Consular Corps, we are delighted that Rotarian Antonio Gelonesi, Honorary Consul General of Namibia, has been appointed as the new Secretary-General. This transition ensures the continued strength of this vital relationship, allowing Sydney Rotary to further our international projects and peacebuilding activities alongside the global diplomatic community.

A Legacy of Diplomatic Engagement: Spotlight on 2007

For over two decades, the Consular Luncheon has been a cornerstone of the Sydney Rotary calendar, interrupted only by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Presidential reports dating back to 2003 consistently highlight this event as a premier platform for international fellowship.

A standout example of this tradition was the 2007 Consular Day, hosted by then-President Gerry Rhys. During the luncheon, President Rhys noted a remarkable fact: outside of New York City, Sydney hosts the second-largest Consular Corps in the world.

The 2007 event was a resounding success thanks to the unique dual roles of our members: Paul Wenham, who served as Secretary-General of the Corps, and Goroslav Keller, the Deputy Dean. Together, they coordinated a high-profile gathering featuring a keynote address by Stephen Smith, the Consul-General of the United States, further cementing Sydney Rotary’s role as a bridge between the local business community and global diplomacy.
