Welcoming Our Newest Australians: The Sydney Rotary Citizenship Ceremony
For over two decades, the Rotary Club of Sydney has held a profound tradition that sits at the very heart of our commitment to community and nation-building. Each year, we dedicate a special luncheon to a formal Australian Citizenship Ceremony, officially welcoming a new group of individuals into our national family.This event is more than a meeting; it is a celebration of the diverse journeys that converge to form the modern Australian story.
A Legacy of Inclusion and Fellowship
Since the early 2000s, Sydney Rotary has partnered with the Department of Home Affairs (the federal authority responsible for citizenship) to host this moving event. In the presence of Rotarians, visiting dignitaries, and family members, approximately 10 to 15 candidates take their final step toward becoming Australian citizens.
The ceremony is conducted by a presiding officer from the Department, ensuring that every legal requirement is met with the dignity and respect the occasion deserves. For these new citizens—hailing from every corner of the globe—the Rotary luncheon provides a warm, communal environment to mark one of the most significant milestones of their lives.
Celebrating the Great Multicultural Success
Each ceremony features a distinguished keynote speaker who explores Australia’s growth as one of the world’s most successful multicultural nations. These addresses often reflect on how Australia has uniquely managed to weave together a tapestry of diverse cultures, faiths, and backgrounds into a cohesive, peaceful, and prosperous society.
Our speakers remind us that the "Australian Way of Life" is not defined by a single heritage, but by a shared commitment to freedom, the rule of law, and a "fair go" for all. By hosting these ceremonies, Sydney Rotary reinforces its belief in Business with Purpose and Service Above Self, recognizing that a strong community is built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared values.
The Australian Citizenship Pledge
A unique and moving highlight of this annual luncheon is the opportunity for long-standing citizens in the room to join the candidates. As the new Australians take their oath, Rotarians and guests are invited to stand and re-affirm their own commitment by reciting the Australian Citizenship Pledge.

(Note: The phrase "under God" is optional based on the individual's preference.)
