Statement of Solidarity

Sydney Rotary Club stands in solidarity with all those affected by the deeply distressing events in Bondi. Our thoughts are with those who were harmed, their families, and everyone in the wider community touched by this tragedy.

In times like this, solidarity is often expressed through care and presence. We are reminded of the importance of checking in on one another, listening with compassion, and offering support where we can.

LIFE SAVING PARTNERSHIP LAUNCH: EVENT SUMMARY

Thank you to everyone who attended the launch of the Rotary Club of Sydney and Ambulance NSW Partnership.

Guests heard from Dr Brian Burns, emergency physician and clinical professor, and Dr Mark Dennis, cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. They outlined how the pre hospital ECMO CPR program brings advanced heart and lung support directly to cardiac arrest patients. Early intervention and high quality ultrasound equipment are crucial and the program is already showing strong survival outcomes in New South Wales.

Rotary is helping expand this work so more people can receive life saving care when every second counts.

Rotary OVC Zimbabwe Community Project

Sydney Rotary OVC Zimbabwe Community Project

Since 2016 some $650,000 has been raised and invested in this community building project in Zimbabwe.
 
The initiative focuses on providing support for disabled and disenfranchised youth, including agricultural inputs and mobility devices.  It is active in supporting the needs of over 700 + disabled and disadvantaged children and young people in a rural part of Northern Zimbabwe. 
 
Plans for a safe house for abused girls and young women are well underway as fundraising efforts continue to complete the community hall.
 
The project engages a very effective two-level oversight system that ensures funds go where they are supposed to go.

Project Manager

Roderick (Bernard) MacLeod trained in the UK where he completed a PgD in Adult Psychotherapy and a Masters in Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy.
 
He has worked across a number of settings including the UK’s National Health Service and in British primary schools and psychotherapy clinics.
Bernard has worked in private practice in Australia since 2010.
 
Bernard is a past President of CCAFPAA (Couple, Child and Family Psychotherapy Association of Australasia); an Associate Member of NSWIPP (New South Wales Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy) and a Clinical Member of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counsellors Federation of Australia).
 
Bernerd has been an active member of Sydney Rotary since 2016 joining to seek Rotary assistance in structuring fundraising in Australia for the Sydney Rotary Zimbabwe Project. Rotary Australia and International maintains financial structures for often tax effective fundraising in many countries to support projects in countries of need.

Rotary International Logo

The symbol of Rotary since its early days.

A wheel has been the symbol of Rotary since its early days. The first design was made in 1905 by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engraver who drew a simple wagon wheel, with a few lines to show motion. The wheel was said to illustrete 'civilisation and movement'.
 
Most early clubs had some form of wagon wheel on their publication and letterheads.
 
To address the growing number of emblems, the Board of Rotary International Association appointed Charles Mackintosh, of the Rotary Club of Chicago, US, and Oscar Bjorge, of the Rotary Club of Duluth, US, to the committee charged with standardising the Rotary emblem.
 
In November 1919 the Board adopted Oscar's design of six spokes and 24 cogs, along with a detailed description. In 1942, Will Forker, of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles, US, advised that the geared wheel was mechanically unsound and would not work without a key in the center of the gear to attach it to a power shaft. A key was added and in January 2924, the Board finally approved the emblem.
 
For many years, the wheel stood alone as our logo. Although the words 'Rotary International' were embedded in the wheel, they were hard to read from a distance. So in 2013, Rotary expanded the official logo to include the word 'Rotary' next to the wheel.
 
The Rotary wheel remains our mark of excellence and part of our official logo to this day.
 
Rotary logo is today considered one of the world's most recognisable logos.

'Wheels of Aid' project

Together, we have made difference.  The 'Wheels of Aid' vehicle has been purchased and is now  delivering life-saving aid to those in desperate need.
 

The vehicle is delivering aid  to twelve refugee shelters that house thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs). 

It will also bring relief to tens of thousands living in conflict-affected areas in south-eastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

Thousands of families in the Ukraine’s front-line city of Zaporizhzhia are still seeking safety and relief including as many as 68,000 children who have lost their homes and need food and warmth.

Sydney Rotary and the Sydney Alliance were delighted to partner with Rotary Zaporizhzhia-Khortytsia and thank our fellow Rotarians from the following clubs - West Wollongong. Parramatta and South Brisbane for their contributions to the project.
