Respect@Work: National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces & Why we need more Women working in Law Enforcement

The guest speaker at Sydney Rotary Club’s lunchtime meeting on Tuesday 9th March will be will be Australia’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins. She is also a member of the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Her purpose is to advance gender equality, consistent with the Sex Discrimination Act and the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women.

Kate is leading a number of projects, including the recently launched report
Respect@Work: National Inquiry into Sexual Harassment in Australian Workplaces and the Commission’s collaborative project on cultural reform with the Australian Defence Force. Kate is also Co-Chair of Play by the Rules, a joint project between human rights agencies and sports commissions to make grass roots sports safe, fair and inclusive.

Prior to joining the Commission, Kate spent three years as the Victorian Equal
Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, 20 years as lead equal opportunity partner with Herbert Smith Freehills’ and many years serving on the boards of Berry Street Victoria, Heide Museum of Modern Art and Carlton Football Club.

Appearing in person at this meeting will be Justine Gough, Assistant Commissioner Australian Federal Police, who will discuss “Why we need more women working in Law Enforcement.”

Assistant Commissioner Justine Gough has been a member of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) since 1990. She holds a Master’s Degrees in Psychology and Terrorism, Safety & Security and a Graduate Diploma in Dispute Resolution.

AC Gough has completed Police Leadership courses at AIPM Manly, Australia, the ICAC Chief Investigators’ Command Course in Hong Kong and the FBI National Academy in Quantico, United States. She has also attended Senior Executive Leadership programs at the National Security College of the Australian National University.

During her career with the AFP, A/AC Gough has worked in a variety of Portfolios, including Organised Crime, Counter-Terrorism, Political and Sensitive Investigations, Intelligence and Child Protection.

In 2015, she was posted to Hong Kong as the AFP Senior Liaison Officer, with country responsibilities for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. In July 2017, promoted to Commander Crime Operations, she returned to Canberra and was responsible for National Response Operations, Offshore and Sensitive Investigations, including Espionage and Foreign Interference and Child Protection Operations, incorporating the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation.
