Be Slavery Free: Libby Sorrell raises awareness of slavery and child labour

08 February 2022, 12:30 - 08 February 2022, 13:30

Libby Sorrell has been involved human rights issues since the late 1970s, initially through Amnesty International of which she is still a member. The inaugural STOP THE TRAFFIK conference in 2007 in Sydney heightened her awareness that people-trafficking and slavery still occur in almost every country of the world including Australia and she joined the organisation in 2009 soon after it was established in Australia. STOP THE TRAFFIK, with the support of like-minded individuals and groups made a major contribution to the passing of Australia’s Modern Slavery Act in November 2018. STOP THE TRAFFIK changed its name to Be Slavery Free in 2019 in accordance with new definitions of Modern Slavery and to better describe the work they do. Libby’s main involvement has been with advocacy and awareness-raising, and has spoken to schools, various community organisations, churches and Rotary clubs in the Sydney-Blue Mountains area.

Be Slavery Free’s Free’s current campaigns are focused on the Chocolate, Tea, Fashion (in relation to cotton in particular) and Seafood industries.

Other campaigns concern Child Labour, the Uyghurs of north-west China and topical issues as they arise for example Australia’s ratification of the International Labour Organisation’s Forced labour Protocol.
