Rotary Club of Sydney Newsletter - August 2024
It's been a busy month starting with the Changeover, followed by 2 Lunches at the UBS Meeting rooms and 2 social events. Members have been busy travelling the world, winning awards and above all else living up to the Rotary mission of Service above Self. Read about some of the activities here.
2nd July, Presidential Changeover 2024/2025
A big thank you to all that attended!
Passing on the trappings of office
With a special thanks to my wife, Jay, and our twins Julian and Elizabeth
Charlie and I wish to pass on our gratitude to everybody that attended the Changeover Celebrations and contributed to the event. Special mention of our fantastic MC on the Day, P.P. Mark Dyer and the organising team of Iurie Brinister, Phoebe Alexander, Christine Yen, and Geoffrey Little.
With just under 50 in attendance we were very happy with the demonstration of support and look forward to similar numbers at future events.
This is now my 3rd newsletter and I hope you find it informative and that it inspires you to action. Rotarians are people of action and there are so many opportunities though our club to help causes and communities that are dear to you. Join a committee, volunteer to help with our service events such as the Multiple Sclerosis Megaswim BBQ later this month. Your club, your community needs you.
Vision Beyond Australia (VBA) and the Rotary NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards (Rotary NSW POOTYA) are two causes we have a long history with and have supported from their very inception. If you own or are involved with a company looking for avenues to place Philanthropic funds these are two great causes to support. Reach out to me if you are interested or know someone who might be.
This year lets make an extra effort to support them, save these dates:
VBA Fundraiser, The Indian Dinner - 25/Oct/2024
Rotary NSW POOTYA - 1/Nov/2024
VBA Charity Golf Day and Dinner - 21/Mar/2025
Thank you and have a great month. Regards Glenn

Layne Scopano - Rotary Global Ambassadorial Scholar
Layne Scopano, is an emerging researcher in the field of public health. She is committed to health equity, advocacy, and community engagement.
She completed her undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, as well as Spanish, at the University of South Carolina Honors College.
Layne's previous research focused on the neurobehavioral development of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Indigenous community health. Currently, Layne is investigating resilience in emerging adulthood, with a future goal of studying food and water security in remote and very remote communities in Australia.
For her independent research project on Indigenous maternal and child nutrition, Layne lived with and worked alongside the people in Palotoa Teparo, a native community in the Amazon River Basin of Peru.
Now she is pursuing a Master of Public Health at the University of Sydney, supported by a Rotary Global Ambassadorial Scholarship and as her host Rotary Club of Sydney we can all be proud of our role in helping to develop emerging leaders that will make positive changes in the world.

John Given OAM - Important Update
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that our dear friend and fellow Rotary Sydney member, John Given, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. John has been a cornerstone of our club, dedicating many years to organising the NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards, which has significantly contributed to our community and our club's standing.
During this challenging time, John and his family need our support and understanding. I have been in contact with the John's wife over the past few weeks and they kindly request that you refrain from calling the family directly. Instead, please send your messages of support and encouragement via text. This will allow them to manage communications in a way that is less overwhelming.
Let us come together as a club to support John and his family, reflecting the strength and unity that defines the Rotary Club of Sydney.
