Australia has dropped its opposition to a landmark treaty banning nuclear weapons At a recent Rotary Sydney meeting the guest speaker was Gem Romuld, Australian director of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize winner ICAN, the International Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons. At the meeting she told us how ICAN was promoting support for the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, a treaty that Australia had until now opposed.  In breaking news, the government has now dropped Australia’s opposition to the UN Treaty. Clearly a step in the direction of peace. Our next club meeting on Tuesday 8 November will have a peacebuilding focus as well – this time in the Middle East. Hopefully that meeting will also be followed by a breakthrough... |
